The Storfjorden, Svalbard, Earthquake Sequence 2008–2020: Transtensional Tectonics in an Arctic Intraplate Region

چکیده

Abstract An earthquake sequence in the Storfjorden offshore area southwest of Spitsbergen Svalbard archipelago initiated with a 21 February 2008 magnitude Mw 6.1 event. This had previously not produced any significant earthquakes, but between and 2020, total ?2800 earthquakes were detected, ?16 them being moderate size (ML?4.0). Applying double-difference relocation to improve relative locations reveals that activity is linked several subparallel faults striking southwest–northeast extend across entire crust. The trend also found as possible fault plane from regional moment tensor inversion. solutions range oblique normal center cluster pure strike slip farther away are consistent compressional ?1 axis roughly east–west direction plunging 57°, extensional ?3 subhorizontal trending north–south. mainshock steeply dipping southeast, other appear be near vertical. existence oblique, right-lateral strike-slip motion on southwest–northeast-trending component faulting events suggests transtensional tectonics around result activation complex system.

Intraplate and interplate faulting interactions during the August 31, 2012, Philippine Trench earthquake (Mw 7.6) sequence

[1] On August 31, 2012, a large (Mw 7.6) thrust earthquake occurred within the subducting Philippine Sea plate seaward of a low seismicity region of the plate boundary (9.5 N– 11.5 N), possibly as a result of horizontal compressional stress accumulation offshore of a locked megathrust. The mainshock ruptured from 30–50 km depth, with high radiated-energy/seismic-moment ratio and enriched shortp...

Draft genome sequence of an ammonia-oxidizing archaeon, "Candidatus Nitrosopumilus sediminis" AR2, from Svalbard in the Arctic Circle.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) typically predominate over ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in marine sediments. We herein present the draft genome sequence of an ammonia-oxidizing archaeon, "Candidatus Nitrosopumilus sediminis" AR2, which was enriched in culture from a marine sediment obtained off Svalbard, within the Arctic Circle. The typical genes involved in archaeal ammonia oxidation and carbon...

Characterisation of Arctic Bacterial Communities in the Air above Svalbard

Atmospheric dispersal of bacteria is increasingly acknowledged as an important factor influencing bacterial community biodiversity, biogeography and bacteria-human interactions, including those linked to human health. However, knowledge about patterns in microbial aerobiology is still relatively scarce, and this can be attributed, in part, to a lack of consensus on appropriate sampling and anal...

4.5) Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico earthquake: implications for tectonics and seismic hazard of the region
